6 ways to support women in the workplace in 2023

The case for supporting women in work
The business case for gender-balanced workplaces is growing stronger all the time. There is mounting evidence that having more women in leadership roles increases profitability and productivity, leads to greater creativity, innovation and openness, and can help to attract and retain talent and enhance company reputation. However, even though almost 75% of businesses having equal opportunity or diversity and inclusion policies in place, more needs to be done to address persistent gender imbalances and biases and help women thrive in work.
Social Pantry – a socially sustainable workplace

Social Pantry is a female-founded, female-led enterprise with a 2/3 female majority at leadership level, and high levels of female representation across all areas of business. Our commitment to sustainability includes social sustainability. Seeing sustainability through a gender lens has shown us how these issues are intimately connected. For International Women’s Day 2023, here are some ways you can help support women at work based on expert consensus and our own experience as a pioneering female-led business:
Embrace Equity

#EmbraceEquity. This is the theme of International Women’s Day 2023. It is a call for people to understand, acknowledge and value, the difference between ‘equality’ and ‘equity’. Empoloyers need to know why equality is not enough and equity is needed to ensure women’s advancement. You can read more about it here. Then share the link in the Work WhatsApp group and start a conversation with your colleagues.
Unconscious bias training

Discover and deliver unconscious bias training. Unconscious gender bias describes the unintentional, automatic mental responses based on gender, stemming from traditions, norms, values, stereotypes, cultural messages and experience. Gender bias is held by, and implicates, people of all genders, but it is well documented that gender bias towards women holds women back. And businesses suffer as a result too! Unconscious bias training is an effective first-step to addressing these biases. It brings them to awareness and offers robust, practical strategies to implement.

There are lots of different providers, but Laughology, Diverse Matters, EW Group and Equality and Diversity UK are good places to begin looking. Of course, attendance and engagement are key, and one way to enhance engagement is to make an enjoyable, memorable occasion of UCB training through amenities such as top notch barista coffee, delicious catering, and unforgettable themed / branded treats. (More on this here. And you guessed it, Social Pantry can provide all of this for you!)
Representation matters

It’s well-documented that companies with better representation of women are going further, however most companies need to take specific, targeted steps to fix their broken rung. This starts with identifying where the largest gap in promotions is for women, making sure women and men are put up for promotion at similar rates, monitor outcomes to make sure they’re equitable, and root out biases in the evaluation process. It’s important to take an intersectional approach that considers how different identities intersect with being a woman. For example being a woman and black, queer, disabled etc. Female representation needs to be inclusive of all women. Social Pantry is bucking trends and leading the way with a Senior Leadership Team that is 2/3 female majority.
Women centred work benefits

Offer work benefits that benefit women specifically. Remember, equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

Whilst attitudes towards the division of childcare responsibilities are changing, research shows that behaviour lags and women continue to bear the majority of responsibility. Offering women flexible hours, hybrid work arrangements, financial contributions towards childcare, emergency childcare solutions, mentoring and mental health support are some of the ways you can achieve equity in this area.
Support female-owned businesses

Support other female-owned businesses. Brighten up the office with flowers from female-led floristry businesses. Commission female creators to work on your design brief. Use client gifting as an opportunity to invest in, collaborate with, and showcase female makers. Order team treats from female-led food businesses… In short, prioritise female-led enterprises at every opportunity and draw attention to the women behind them!
