19 Ideas to Host a Sustainable Christmas Party

‘Tis the season to deck the halls, hop from party to party, and indulge in all things merry and bright!  We absolutely love this time of year in the events calendar – the twinkling lights, decadent menus and infectious joy in the air really does make for some spectacular celebrations.

The downside?  In the UK, we generate 30% more waste at Christmas than any other time of year – from discarded Christmas party invitation and cards, disposable decorations and unwanted gifts, to leftover party food, half-drunk bottles of fizz, and even clothing bought for the festive season and never worn again, there’s no doubt that Christmas party season is an inherently unsustainable time of year.

But it doesn’t have to be.  Hosting a sustainable Christmas party is easier than you might think. At Social Pantry, we have over thirteen years of experience catering events in a way that is environmentally conscious.  So, we’re sharing our top tips for planning an eco-friendly Christmas party, covering everything from choosing a venue to deciding on an outfit.

Why Make Your Christmas Parties More Sustainable?

We all want to do our bit to protect the environment, for ourselves and for future generations. With global warming increasing at an alarming rate, there’s never been a more important time to start making changes to the way we live. And small changes really can make a big difference.

So, if you’re hosting a Christmas party this year, consider making at least one sustainable swap, whether it’s switching from paper plates to crockery, changing your fairy lights to low-energy bulbs,  or swapping a real Christmas tree for a reusable one.

Or better yet, why not go the whole hog and follow all of our ideas on how to make your Christmas party more sustainable?

Ideas to Make Your Christmas Party More Sustainable This Year

From finding a venue and creating invitations to catering the big night, we’ve gone through all the key items on your Christmas party planning checklist and suggested ways to make each element more sustainable. Whether it’s choosing a venue with good public transport links, or sending paperless invitations, there are plenty of easy ways to reduce waste and lower your carbon footprint without compromising on festive cheer.

Guildhall

Find the Right Venue

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Social Pantry and it’s important to us that we partner with venues that align with our values. We’re proud to work with a number of partner venues who are setting new standards in sustainable practices.

Guildhall has been awarded the prestigious Silver Award from Green Meetings, recognizing its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.  Somerset House is also a sustainability pioneer, with initiatives like low-energy lighting, thermal insulation, and an on-site power plant that generates 50% of its energy, all while adhering to a zero-to-landfill policy. Lindley Hall has likewise implemented impactful upgrades to reduce its carbon footprint, including energy-efficient lighting, fridges, hand dryers, and the addition of oak doors to improve heat retention.

Promote Low Emissions or Group Travel

Whether you opt for a venue with sustainability on its agenda or not, one easy way to ensure that you’re doing your bit for the environment is to choose a space that is well connected by public transport. Celebrating in London? Consider a venue that’s near tube, train and bus stops, encouraging guests to travel to the party via public transport to avoid the carbon emissions of private cars and taxis. There are plenty of excellent options for central London Christmas party venues out there, including National Gallery,  Tower Bridge, the Southbank Centre and Here at Outernet, but you can browse our full list of partner venues here

Secured a venue out of town? If public transport proves a little trickier, why not organise electric or hybrid coaches to take multiple guests from an easy pick-up point direct to the venue at the same time? Alternatively, for smaller parties, setting up a Whatsapp group for guests in advance can be a useful way to discuss the possibility of car-pooling or shared cab journeys.

Choose Sustainable Catering Options for Your Food & Drink

Food and drink is one of the most important factors to consider when planning a sustainable Christmas party. Let’s face it, it’s all too easy to go overboard in a bid to try and cater for a multitude of different tastes, not to mention trying to avoid every host’s worst fear – that their guests might go hungry! This often leads to hosts over-compensating, buying too much plastic-packaged, mass-produced party food, and far too many bottles of wine, a lot of which ends up in the bin.

Here are just a few ways to minimise your environmental impact when planning your Christmas party catering:

Alex Food

Make Your Own Food

Hosting a small gathering? Try making your own party food at home. Not only will this reduce the excess plastic packaging and environmental costs associated with mass-produced party food, it will also likely save you money – there are plenty of ideas for budget-friendly canapés online, or try making simple puff pastry tarts with a variety of toppings that can be sliced up and shared around.

Ask Guests to Bring a Dish Each

Lack the time or kitchen space to prepare all the food yourself? Ask guests to bring a dish. An online spreadsheet can organise contributions into categories like ‘main’ or ‘dessert,’ ensuring a variety of options without duplicates.

BYOP
BYOB

Have a BYOB Policy

Avoid over-buying drinks by inviting guests to bring their own. A simple ‘BYOB’ instruction on the invitation will do the trick. Not only does this remove one item from your party planning checklist completely, it also significantly cuts your costs as a host, while still ensuring that everyone is catered for.

Hire a Sustainable Catering Company

Looking to hire external catering? Choose a company with a focus on sustainability.  Social Pantry is proud to be a certified B Corp, delivering exceptional events with as little environmental impact as possible. Not only do we run our kitchens with a zero-to-landfill approach, creating menus from locally and sustainably sourced seasonal produce, we’ve also removed global plastic polluters from our drinks menus, switched to renewable energy, and invested in electric vehicles. Our menus cover everything from stand-out, zero-waste canapés to special sit-down meals and eco-conscious cocktails. Find out more about our Christmas party catering here.

Plant Based Menus

Consider Reducing Meat Options

It’s no secret that meat production is damaging the environment. Not only is it the biggest cause of deforestation globally, it’s also a key contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. But with so much fantastic seasonal produce around in the UK during this time of year, making a switch to plant-based alternatives needn’t mean missing out on flavour. At Social Pantry, we’ve worked hard to develop an exciting festive menu that’s rich in vegetables, fruits and herbs. Any meat or fish that we do use is sustainably, locally and ethically sourced, meaning you can enjoy it with less guilt…

Reduce Food Waste with Accurate Head Counts

To minimise food waste, planning is key. Make sure your invitations clearly request both an RSVP and dietary requirements. If each guest and their dietary or cultural requirements are accounted for, this means that the correct amount of food can be prepared, avoiding unnecessary waste.

Head Count
Take Leftovers

Allow Guests to Take Home Leftovers or Donate to Food Banks

Even the most careful planners can end up with leftovers after a party. So, consider providing compostable food boxes so that guests can take leftovers home. Or, if you’ve opted for shop-bought food, any packets which remain unopened can be donated to local food banks.

Send Paperless Invitations

While receiving a paper invitation in the post or at work can feel extra special, it’s not long before it ends up in the bin – and that’s if it’s not immediately misplaced after opening!

A digital invitation is the way forward. Not only does it save on paper and the time, energy and costs associated with printing, it’s also a better way to guarantee that guests have received the invitation and logged all the details. In fact, emailing invitations directly to people’s calendars means that they can log the date and time instantly. It also means that if guests have questions or hosts have more information to share, it takes just the tap of a button to get in touch.

If you do want to add that little bit of festive fun with a personalised,  designed invitation that recipients can ‘open’, there are plenty of websites and apps that allow you to create these for free. These include Evite, Paperless Post and Greetings Island. Most of these sites also enable hosts to track RSVPs, making party planning a whole lot simpler.

Consider the Dress Code

While it’s always tempting to opt for a classic festive dress code like ‘sparkles’ or ‘novelty Christmas jumper’, unfortunately these are some of the most unsustainable options you could choose.

Sequins are a big no-no for a sustainable Christmas party. Made from petroleum-based plastics,  they not only take thousands of years to decompose, they also release microplastics into our water systems every time they go through the wash. And that’s before even mentioning all the sequins that shed from our clothes during the party itself! A 2019 survey by Oxfam also revealed that while 40% of women asked would buy sequined clothing for the festive season, only a quarter of them would wear it again. As with Christmas jumpers, this type of clothing is often seen as single-use, worn once for the Christmas party and never again. This leads to a huge amount of synthetic materials and plastics in landfill, which then leak toxic chemicals into the environment.

Instead, opt for a dress code that encourages people to wear something they already own, rent an outfit or buy second-hand. You could even be explicit about this on the invitation. Try a theme like ‘Retro Glam’, where guests are encouraged to either shop vintage or delve into the depths of their old family wardrobe. Or, better still, try ‘Conscious Christmas’, encouraging people to wear something that is ethically and environmentally-friendly, whether it’s handmade, second-hand, re-worn or upcycled. With this kind of theme, the possibilities are endless. Not only can guests have fun getting creative in the run up to the party, it’s also a great conversation starter on the night, as everyone seeks to find out what makes their fellow party-goer’s outfits so sustainable.

Avoid Using Single-Use Cups, Cutlery & Plates

We get it, using paper plates, cups and napkins and disposable cutlery at a Christmas party is a temptingly convenient option – the prospect of shunning washing up in favour of chucking everything in the bin is all too enticing. But this is not only a devastating waste of paper, it also leads to tons of excess rubbish in landfill, which causes environmental problems as it decomposes and leaches harmful gases.

The best alternative is to use crockery and cutlery, which can be washed and reused time and time again. However, if this isn’t an option, consider looking for biodegradable paper plates that can be safely disposed of within your food waste and turned into compost – standard paper plates can’t be recycled once they’re soiled with food and oil, so opting for compostable is the better option.

Use Sustainable Christmas Crackers

Around 39 million Christmas crackers are thrown away each year. And it’s not just the crackers themselves that are the problem – most are filled with unwanted plastic packaging and toys that inevitably end up in landfill too. Consider buying recycled and other sustainably-made options. We love these ones from RSPB – not only are they recyclable, they’re also filled with chocolates instead of plastic toys, which is just what you want to round off a festive dinner! Plus, a portion of the sale goes towards supporting the RSPB. We also love the Happy Crackers Christmas collection!

For anyone booking Christmas party catering with Social Pantry, we can provide sustainably made, luxury personalised crackers for your Christmas party, along with gifts, handwritten menus, place cards and more. Contact one of our event planners to find out more.

Alternatively, why not opt for something a little different? Instead of crackers, you could make your own party hats for guests and package them in a recyclable box or bag along with hand written jokes, seed packets and other small, eco-friendly gifts. This also adds a more personal touch as the packages and gifts can be tailored to the guests.

Christmas Tree

Hire a Christmas Tree or Purchase Pre-Loved

Over 160,000 tonnes of Christmas trees are thrown away after December each year, emitting over 100,000 tonnes of methane gas as they decompose. If you plan to host a Christmas party annually, surprisingly it may be more sustainable to invest in a good-quality fake tree which can be stored and reused time and time again. For an even more sustainable option, try finding a preloved tree on websites like Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree.

Prefer a real tree? There are several companies that allow you to rent a Christmas tree for the festive period. The idea is simple – purchase your Christmas tree as normal, but come January when the festive season is over, the tree is collected, re-planted and looked after for the year, until it’s rented again the following year! Check out websites like Love a Christmas Tree or London Christmas Tree Rental.

Deck the Halls with Sustainable Decorations

From plastic-free, reusable bunting and streamers to seasonal plants that will last way beyond your Christmas party, there are plenty of sustainable decorations you can buy online or in stores that can be used year on year.

Better yet, why not make your own? Organising a DIY-decoration afternoon with friends ahead of your Christmas party can be a nice way to get in the mood for the big event, plus we find the mindful, calming nature of a creative task like this can do wonders for your mental health.  Simple paper decorations like snowflakes, garlands and tinsel can be very effective and are easy to make yourself, plus they can be reused or recycled once the event is over.

If you know it’s unlikely that you’ll use the decorations again, a sensible option is to rent them instead. Streamadelica is one of our favourite sustainably-minded suppliers, specialising in show-stopping reusable streamer banners and backdrops. They’ll deck your halls with epic installations, then, once the party’s over, pack it all up ready to be hired again.

LED Candles

Light Your Party with LEDs

It wouldn’t be Christmas without the twinkle of fairy lights, but traditional incandescent bulbs contain toxic materials like mercury, which can cause serious damage to the environment if not disposed of properly. The energy used to power these Christmas lights also contributes to extra greenhouse gas emissions over this period.

So, if you want to make one, small but effective change to your festive decorations this year, swap traditional fairy lights to ones with LED bulbs – they can use up to 80% less energy so you’ll not only save on emissions, but on energy costs too. Win-win.

Otherwise, try eco-friendly candles in reusable holders. Look for candles made from natural waxes like coconut or beeswax, and consider repurposing old wine bottles or jars as candle holders —an easy, stylish way to reduce waste and save money.

Give Greener Gifts

Organising a Secret Santa? It’s already common practice for spending limits or gift themes to be set,  so why not go one step further and include some sustainable guidelines too? A ‘no plastic gifts’ rule is a great place to start, but other easy ones to consider would be ‘second-hand’ or ‘home-made’ gifts only, organising experiences rather than physical objects, or choosing a charity to donate to on the recipients behalf. You could also insist on wrapping gifts in either reused or recycled materials to avoid unnecessary paper waste.

Waste Management

Consider Waste Management

We know that ‘waste management’ isn’t the most glamorous item on your Christmas party checklist, if it’s even on there at all, but it’s a really important factor to consider.

The easiest way to minimise unnecessary waste ending up in landfill is to set up easily accessible recycling stations. Make sure you have separate, clearly labelled bins for glass, plastic, card and food waste, and if possible, have more than one waste station in the venue (particularly if it’s a large space) to make it as easy as possible for people to access.

Creating a Sustainable Christmas Party Doesn’t Need to Be Difficult.

So whether it’s switching fairy lights to LED bulbs, rewearing an old party dress or choosing a zero-waste caterer, making just a few simple changes to the way you plan your Christmas party really can make a big difference.
