Sustainable Contract Catering: Why It’s Important & How We Do It

Here at Social Pantry, our mission is, and always has been, to deliver extraordinary food while creating meaningful change.

We recognise that the food industry—both here in the UK and globally—has a profound impact on the environment, from the greenhouse gas emissions created by importing ingredients to the staggering amount of food waste it generates. At Social Pantry, we don’t want to be another part of the problem, we want to be part of the solution.

Our goal is to offer more than just delicious food – we’re dedicated to crafting unforgettable dining experiences that tread lightly on the planet. We know there’s a lot of noise around seasonal food and being more sustainable, but we really do practise what we preach.  In fact, the actions we have taken to deliver exceptional experiences in a way that is both environmentally and socially conscious have led to us being officially certified as a B Corp.

Read on to discover why sustainable contract catering is so important and how we do it.

Why Is Sustainability  Important In Contract Catering?

Sustainability is about working with nature, not against it—making choices that protect and preserve our planet’s resources rather than depleting them. It’s about finding harmony with the environment, reducing our footprint, and respecting the balance needed to support life for generations to come.

When it comes to catering, being sustainable means crafting delicious food with minimal impact on the environment. This means choosing ingredients mindfully, sourcing ethically, and embracing methods that minimise waste and inefficiency, all while delivering exceptional quality. But it doesn’t stop there. Sustainable catering also brings a host of additional benefits, from supporting small businesses and boosting the local economy to improving the quality of the food served.

Here are five reasons why sustainability is important when choosing a contract catering service…

1. Supports Small Business and the Economy

Choosing sustainable contract catering isn’t just good for the planet, it’s a powerful way to support small businesses and invest in the local economy. By sourcing ingredients from local farms and independent suppliers, sustainable caterers help small-scale farmers and artisans thrive, creating reliable demand for local goods and even job opportunities within the community.

Local suppliers also bring authenticity and uniqueness to the menu, offering ingredients with character, flavour and quality you won’t find in mass-produced food. And it’s not solely small businesses that sustainable caterers support, it’s also other B Corp businesses who are working towards the same environmental goals as they are. For clients who want their events to make a positive impact, sustainable catering offers the chance to support a network of businesses that truly care about quality, people, and the planet.

2. Minimises Food Waste

In the UK, a staggering 9.52 millions tonnes of food is wasted every year, with around 920,000 tonnes of that generated by the hospitality and food service sector (meaning restaurants, hotels, and catering). Once this ends up in landfill, it begins to decay, releasing methane and other harmful gases, contributing to global warming. Reducing waste is one of the key ways in which contract catering services can act more sustainably.

By planning carefully and forecasting demand, sustainable caterers are able to ensure that the right amount of food is prepared, reducing the amount of waste produced. Any surplus food can be composted, reimagined, or donated to those in need, creating a positive ripple effect that goes beyond just the day’s  catering itself.

3. Reduces Carbon Footprint

Sustainable catering companies take meaningful steps to reduce their carbon footprint by focusing on local sourcing, plant-based menu options, and low-energy processes. By working with nearby suppliers and opting for seasonal ingredients, caterers cut down on transport emissions and support a healthy local food system.

Offering plant-based options is another impactful step that helps caterers reduce emissions linked to meat and dairy, while eco-friendly packaging and minimised single-use plastics lessen waste. As for delivering the catering to clients, sustainable caterers will use electric or hybrid vehicles to minimise emissions.

4. Results in Better Quality Food

There’s no doubt that sustainable catering leads to better quality food, and there are several reasons why. First, sustainable caterers prioritise fresh, local, and responsibly sourced ingredients, often from small-scale and artisan suppliers who are committed to quality. Next, using seasonal, locally grown produce means that ingredients reach the plate at their peak, bringing vibrant flavours and natural goodness to a dish without the need for preservatives or additives. Not only this but when menus are planned with sustainability in mind, it leads to really creative cooking – in trying to reduce waste by using the whole ingredient, you can end up with some seriously inventive and wholly delicious dishes.

5. Supports Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative farming is a sustainable agricultural approach that focuses on revitalising soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and improving ecosystems. It uses techniques like cover cropping (planting crops that protect and enrich the soil between harvests), crop rotation (growing different types of crops in succession on the same land to maintain soil nutrients and improve overall soil health) and no-till farming (avoiding ploughing the soil to preserve its structure, enhance moisture retention, and prevent erosion) to restore the land’s natural fertility, retain water, and reduce carbon emissions.

Unlike conventional farming, which often depletes resources, regenerative methods work in harmony with nature and are crucial for combating climate change by sequestering carbon, improving food quality, and ensuring long-term food security. Prioritising regenerative farming supports a resilient agricultural system that benefits the planet, farmers, and communities alike.

1. Helping to Meet CSR and ESG Targets

Most large companies have Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria to work towards each year. Employing a catering company that focuses on tackling environmental and social issues means that these companies can meet their goals with ease—the work has already been done for them!

2. Doing Your Bit for People, as Well as the Planet

Environmental and ethical practices go hand in hand, so sustainable catering companies aim to care for the planet while also making a positive social impact.  As well as focussing on green initiatives,  sustainable contract catering companies will also make efforts to only use products, suppliers, farmers and producers whose values align with their own, meaning that when you set up your catering contract, you can guarantee that you are supporting both sustainable and ethical businesses.

3. Supporting Regenerative Farming

By sourcing from farmers who practice regenerative farming, sustainable catering supports agricultural methods that restore soil health, enhance biodiversity, and combat climate change. This approach not only benefits the environment but ensures better-quality ingredients, and ensures that every meal supports a sustainable farming practice that ensures the future of farming.

4. Lowering Your Business’s Carbon Footprint

Sustainable catering companies prioritise local suppliers and seasonal produce, cutting down on the need for long-haul transportation. This reduces the carbon footprint of your meals while supporting local economies, meaning that just by eating your catered lunch, you’re helping to keep your business’s carbon footprint at a minimum. A sustainable contract caterer would also provide the option for a carbon-neutral delivery, whether that was via an electric vehicle, or via bicycle (should the journey time permit!).

5. Providing Better Food

Using seasonal, locally grown produce means ingredients reach the plate at their peak, both in terms and also their nutritional value – ingredients that are picked and consumed closer to harvest are more nutritionally-rich, as prolonged storage and transportation causes vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin C, folate and carotene to rapidly decline. Lunch never tasted so good!

6. Minimising Food Waste

Minimising food waste can take many forms, although for a true sustainable caterer, you would expect that at every stage of the process, food produce is utilised to its fullest. From the menu design concept down to the final plate, you can expect food that would be potentially wasted to be creatively reimagined, repurposed, composted, or donated, reducing food waste to a minimum and supporting the circular economy.

Social Pantry’s Approach to Sustainable Contract Catering

Sustainability isn’t just about preserving the planet, at Social Pantry, we believe that environmental and social concerns are connected. We see our business as ‘a force for good’, so as well as doing our bit for the planet, we want to make a meaningful impact on its people too.

From sourcing seasonal, local produce to championing zero-waste practices, we aim to set a gold standard in sustainable catering. Our approach combines environmental responsibility with social impact, proving that good business can—and should—be a force for good. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

We Use Seasonal, Local Produce

We partner with local suppliers to minimise our carbon footprint and support nearby communities, creating our dishes from the freshest, seasonal, local produce. We caused a stir a few years ago when we banned all avocado from our menus, citing deforestation, soil degradation, funding of drug cartels, and contributing to climate change as just a few of our reasons why. Social Pantry makes these tough decisions so you don’t have to. When you choose to work with a sustainable contract caterer, you can rest assured that ethical, sustainable choices are being made for you.

We Operate a Zero-Food-Waste-To-Landfill Policy

We cleverly devise our menus to make the most of the whole ingredient, whether that’s using multiple cuts of meat from the same animal, or every part of a fruit or vegetable, root to leaf,  in order to minimise waste. Any unavoidable food waste is fed into our anaerobic biodigester, which uses a natural biological process to efficiently break down food, turning it into a liquid that can be discharged into our normal plumbing.

We Have Gold Standard Recycling

We’re certified Gold by First Mile for our recycling rates. First Mile operates a zero-to-landfill policy that offers many recycling streams, with non-recyclable waste harnessed for green energy generation. Collections operate on an all-electric fleet and are optimised to utilise clean-air routes.

We’ve Removed Global Plastic Polluters from Our Drinks Menu

Back in 2023 Social Pantry made the choice to ban certain drinks brands based on issues such as poor environmental practices, tax avoidance, unethical sourcing, human rights, worker’s rights and animal welfare, which included the world’s biggest plastic polluters – Coca Cola and Nestlé. Instead, we welcomed drinks brands that align with our values. These include Dalston’s (vegan and carbon-neutral), Cawston Press (uses “wonky” produce to cut down on food waste), and Belvoir Farm (supports biodiversity through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme).

We Only Use Reusable or Compostable Serveware

We use real crockery, cutlery, tableware and glassware at the majority of our event and workplace catering, so that it can be washed and reused time and time again. For any events or workplaces that require ‘grab-and-go’-style catering, we use fully compostable packaging which can be disposed of in a standard food waste bin and biodegrades.

We’ve Switched to Electric Vehicles

At Social Pantry,  we have switched all our fleet of delivery vans to electric, cutting carbon emissions by 75% with every trip that we make. This transition to electric vehicles ensures greener, more sustainable deliveries and operations.

We Work with Prison Leavers

We’re proud to be the leading employer of prison leavers in the hospitality industry. Since 2015, we’ve employed over 35 people who were previously serving time and in 2023, 11% of our workforce were prison leavers.

We Work with Sustainable and Ethical Suppliers

We partner with a carefully-chosen selection of suppliers who share our values, amplifying our collective impact on the planet. We source wheat and flour from Wildfarmed, who champion regenerative farming and prioritise soil health; traceable, MSC-certified British fish from Daily Fish Supplies; coffee from the first prison-based coffee roasters, Redemption Roasters; and ethically and environmentally-sourced meat from Europe’s first B Corp butcher, The Ethical Butcher, to name just a few.

We’re a Member of the Better Business Act Coalition

As part of the Better Business Act coalition, we’re committed to transforming how businesses operate to create a fairer, greener future. The coalition advocates for changes to UK law to ensure all businesses align their interests with the wider benefit of society and the environment. By joining this movement, we’re reinforcing our pledge to prioritise purpose alongside profit in every decision we make.

We Work With a Sustainability Consultant

We’ve partnered with sustainability consultancy Bold Green Strategies, who help us to continuously evaluate and improve our operations, from reducing emissions to enhancing our waste management systems, ensuring that sustainability remains at the core of everything we do.

We’re a Certified B Corp

We’re proud to have recently been officially certified as a B Corp, a prestigious certification which recognises our commitment to balancing profit with purpose, ensuring we prioritise the well-being of people and the planet in everything we do.

Common challenges and solutions in sustainable contract catering

There are many challenges to overcome in sustainable catering, here are some of our most common:

Cost and operational challenges

Sustainable practices can initially appear costlier due to premium ingredients from small-scale and artisan suppliers, and eco-friendly packaging. However, streamlining operations to reduce waste and inefficiencies offsets higher ingredient costs. So it’s important to educate clients on long-term savings from reduced waste and improved food quality.

Stakeholder buy-in

Convincing key decision-makers of the value of using sustainable catering companies can be difficult. However, there are several benefits to both brands and customers which can be presented – such as the points above!

Worries about running out of food.

With sustainable catering companies focussing on limiting waste, some may fear that there won’t be enough food to go around. However, with years of experience in catering, these companies are adept at ensuring there is always enough food, while still minimising waste.
