Luxury is no longer something directly associated with tangible items and material excess. Instead, luxury is about experience, and is anchored by principles and practices. People are aspiring less and less towards artificial, outward-facing performance of luxury and instead focusing on a more authentic, inward-focused and personal experience of luxury.

The word “luxury” originates in the Latin term “luxus” which means sumptuousness and excess, so it’s right to wonder, “is luxury without excess even possible?”. We would argue, yes! When you consider that when asked for their most valued luxury, nowadays many people will cite “time”.

Luxury without excess is all about mindful consumption. It’s no secret that mindfulness is key to making the most of the time we have – a way of slowing down and a sense of expanded time – and that mindful consumption is intimately connected to sustainability. Sustainability is all about what can be maintained over time, and sustainability efforts are geared towards avoiding prematurely repleting resources so that we have the most time possible left to enjoy them.

Therefore, when it comes to thinking about “luxury without excess” at Christmas, the focus is on making the most of this special time of year, and making the most of what we have – time, friends & family, natural resources – without letting anything go to waste. It’s not about scrimping on beauty, comfort, sensory delights, or richness of experience. Quite the opposite! It’s about maximising pleasure from what truly matters, and avoiding the pitfalls associated with material excess. With this in mind, stay tuned for our tips and tricks on how to enjoy this holiday season in luxury, without excess.
