10 Celebration Cake Makers We Love

They say a party without a cake is just a meeting, and whilst we cater those too, we think things are a lot more fun when cake is involved. We love working alongside ultra talented and creative cake makers to arrange spectacular celebration cakes for our clients.
If you love cake as much as we do, you may already be following London food blogger and queen of cake recommendations @emmahitsthespot. Emma is part of the marketing team here at Social Pantry and brings her passion for baked goods to the role, along with some great recommendations of what and where to eat! Here are 10 cake makers she loves, and that we love too!
From elegant wedding cakes decorated with edible flowers, to lavish birthday cakes with mounds of buttercream and tongue-in-cheek messages piped on top; plant-based and gluten-free cakes to cover all your guests’ dietary needs; all-natural cakes for your little one’s 1st birthday cake smash; to gasp-inducing choux towers and much more…. these cake makers are guaranteed to bring sweet satisfaction at any celebration.

The Proof

They say “the proof is in the pudding” and East London Bakery The Proof takes this to the next level with show-stopping celebration cakes and desserts that taste every bit as good as they look. The Proof has run with the shag cake trend, offering fuzzy textured buttercream cakes in a dazzling array of rainbow bright and pastel shades, as well as their own stealthily cool navy, baby pink and cream brand colours. Cutting into their gorgeously girly ‘Marble Cake” topped with cream coloured buttercream, pink ganache drip, buttercream swirls and sprinkles reveals three layers of rainbow marbled sponge that is guaranteed to go down as party legend.

Le Choux

Not to be confused with other purveyors of choux in London, Le Choux is definitively the place to go for exquisite choux creations of any order. Pastry chef Abigail Scheuer was so fed up with working in aggressive male-dominated kitchens that she started her own entirely female-led business making everything from palm-sized choux buns and eclairs with luxurious seasonal fillings from passion fruit to gianduja, to gasp-inducingly impressive choux towers and croquembouche. You can watch Abigail meticulously working on her craft in the beautiful and serene open kitchen in Ladbroke Grove and buy treats to take away or eat immediately as though you’re in the streets of Paris, or find her striking creations taking centre stage at mega events including the dessert table of the National Restaurant Awards! Le Choux also makes incredible cookies and a flourless chocolate fondant cake (which happens to be gluten free) to die for.

EK Bakery

EK Bakery is an independent bakery specialising in beautiful seasonal cakes and brownies, uniquely decorated with fruits, herbs and flowers depending on what’s in season and available at the time. Summer specials include Alphonso Mango & Coconut Cake and Gooseberry & Elderflower Cake, whilst year round favourites include the best selling Sunshine Cake – a signature creation of banana, pineapple, coconut, carrot and pecan sponge with cream cheese icing and pineapple flowers – and a Malted Chocolate, Peanut & Salted Caramel Cake featuring fudgy chocolate sponges layered with malted chocolate ganache, salted caramel and peanut brittle. Individual cakes, brownies and blondies also make an excellent gifting option too.

Alice Katie Studio

Alice Katie Studio specialises in bold, botanical, plant-based celebration cakes that takes flavours and ingredients that hold nostalgic memories, and uses botanical arrangements, natural flowing swishes and ruffles of buttercream, fresh seasonal fruits and occasional subtle pops of colour to bring beautiful, grown-up cake visions to life. All of the cakes are vegan, but the significant emphasis on flavour and quality ingredients makes it possible to have a delicious and striking plant-based cake without compromise. Your guests won’t even notice it’s plant-based. Signature flavours include a chai spiced sponge with hazelnut praline, toasted hazelnuts and vanilla bean buttercream, and each cake is brought to life from bespoke drawings and digital sketches that offer limitless creativity.

Violet

Violet is a California inspired bakery famous for American style cupcakes with seasonal buttercreams and making Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding cake – a lemon elderflower masterpiece covered in buttercream and fresh flowers! Pastry chef Claire Ptak trained with the legendary Alice Waters at the famous Chez Panisse in California, then moved to the UK and began the business as a market stall on Broadway Market before opening a tiny bakery and café on Wilton Way. Seasonal flavours include Victoria Sponge Cake with homemade Strawberry & Sweet Cicely compote with fresh Garguiette Strawberries and Whipped Cream, or an Amalfi Lemon cake consisting of three laters of vanilla sponge soaked with freshly-squeezed lemon syrup, filled with a tart curd and topped with buttercream flavoured with the zest and juice. The signature lilac-coloured ‘Violet’ chocolate cake boasts three layers of moist devil’s food chocolate cake soaked with vanilla syrup and French violet buttercream.

SÜSS is an online Cake Studio that specialises in the curation of natural dessert tables and lower-sugar wedding cakes and bespoke celebration cakes. SÜSS bakes mindfully with natural, seasonal and organic ingredients to maximise flavour whilst also reducing sugar. Whether you’re after a wedding cake that can be enjoyed by guests with diabetes, a refined-sugar free cake for a baby shower or a celebration cake you can tuck into without worrying about a sugar crash, SÜSS creates beautiful elegant cakes that still look and taste every bit as indulgent as a cake should.  Flavours frequently marry fruit and chocolate with combinations such as White Chocolate & Roasted Apricot Cake, Dark Chocolate & Blackberry, and Vanilla sponge with Rose Vanilla Custard and Sour Cherry Swiss Meringue Buttercream.

Yatu’s Bakery

Yatu’s Bakery motto is “everything handmade” from the meringues, chocolate work, to the fillings, macarons, nut butters and more are all made from scratch. Founder Adiyatu Sambu Balde already had 10 years of experience in professional kitchens before setting up her own bakery at the start of the pandemic, making show-stopping cakes with full creative control. Sambu-Balde is part of London Bakers Against Racism and Yatu’s Bakery has been lauded as a frontrunner of the rise of black owned food business since Covid-19. Yatu’s Bakery cakes are towering architectural wonders that come in fun, fresh and inventive flavours. The matcha, white chocolate, and yuzu cake is a standout option: four layers of matcha buttermilk sponge sandwiched with white chocolate matcha buttercream and zingy yuzu curd filling. The exterior is frosted with more Swiss meringue buttercream and finished with a hypnotising matcha white chocolate drip, homemade miniature meringues, chocolate shards, edible flowers and a dusting of dried yuzu zest.

Green Fox Bakery

Green Fox Bakery believes cake ought to take centre stage at the party and specialises in luxury, artistic cakes for celebrations of all kinds and people of all ages. From the sophisticated simplicity of semi-naked buttercream wedding cakes decorated with elegant floral arrangements, to imaginative illusion cakes and creatively themed kids’ birthday party cakes (though there is no age limit on ordering a three-layer chocolate unicorn cake)! Flavours include “Foxy’s Favourite” – tender chocolate cake filled with light, salted caramel buttercream and a generous layer of smoked salt caramel sauce – and “Lo-coconut” – a light and moist coconut sponge filled with passionfruit curd and covered with coconut cream cheese icing – however each cake is unique and bespoke flavours plus free-from options are available.

Bakes By Olivia

Based in East London, Bakers By Olivia is the creation of a lifelong baker with impeccable style and a huge sweet tooth, specialising in beautiful, sustainable buttercream celebration cakes. The cakes are predominantly Lambeth style cakes with lavish piping over fondant icing to create a dramatic but elegant end result with lots of frills, overlapping scrolls, draping swirls, flowers and ornate details. Glace cherries and swirling piped messages make the whole look pop. Flavours include timeless favourites such as Carrot & Walnut cake with an orange, carrot and cinnamon sponge, walnuts, orange curd and vanilla frosting, as well as American inspired flavours such as Red Velvet or Funfetti.

Lily Vanilli

Columbia Road based bakery Lily Vanilli is one of London’s most iconic bakeries, known for innovative and pioneering cake designs made with seasonal, natural ingredients in surprising flavour combinations. In the early days, Lily experimented with an all-gothic vibes of scorpions, skulls, zombie eyes and a legendary ‘bleeding heart’ cake that went viral in 2010, winning celebrity fans and a huge following, as well as resulting in 10,000 orders one Valentine’s Day! Since then, Lily has made a cake sculpture for the V&A that was exhibited as an artwork before being cut up and eaten, and her celebrity clientele has included Elton John, Kate Moss, Lulu Guinness and 10 Downing Street. Today, her cake designs exemplify the retro patisserie renaissance, with countless rows of pastel piping and mounds of buttercream. There are classic flavours such as vanilla or double chocolate cake with customisable fillings such as passion fruit coulis, salted caramel, fresh sliced bananas or crispy chocolate biscuit pearls, as well as more unusual bespoke flavours such as a Margarita drizzle cake with lime sponge, decorated with hot pink chrysanthemum petals. Lily Vanilli also sells striking handmade statement candles including a pink cherub candle, and an adorable puppy candle almost as cute as the real thing!
